How to Let Claude Sign In to Websites Without Seeing Your Passwords

1Password for Claude lets Claude log in for you while you approve with your fingerprint. How to set it up on a Mac, and what it can and can't do.

Most of what Claude can do for you online stops at a login page. A booking site, a supplier portal, your analytics. Until now the only way past was to hand over a password, which is the one thing you should not do.

1Password for Claude fixes that. Claude asks, you approve with your fingerprint, and 1Password types the login in for it. Claude never sees the password. 1Password says the secret values never enter Claude's context window, memory or Anthropic's systems.

It has been out as a beta since July. What is new this month is the bigger picture: on 22 October 1Password announced 1Password for Agents, which extends the same idea to other AI agents. Most of those are still "coming". The Claude version is the one you can use today.

What you need

  • A Mac

  • The 1Password app and the 1Password browser extension, both version 8.12.28 or later

  • The Claude desktop app, on a paid plan (Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise)

  • The Claude in Chrome extension

If you are on a Team or Enterprise plan, an owner has to switch it on first. It is off by default. For a 1Password business account, an administrator has to allow AI agents to autofill.

Set it up

  1. Open the 1Password app and the Claude desktop app.

  2. In Claude, choose Customize, then Connectors.

  3. Find 1Password and choose Connect.

  4. When 1Password asks, approve with Touch ID or your 1Password password.

Use it

  1. In Claude, choose New, then Cowork.

  2. Ask for a job that needs a login. For example: "Log in to my Squarespace and tell me which pages haven't been updated this year."

  3. 1Password shows a prompt with the matching login already picked. Change it if it is wrong, then approve.

  4. 1Password fills the login in. If Claude's Chrome extension asks permission to go to the site, allow it.

If you sign in with Google or Facebook, Claude asks for both the site's login and the Google or Facebook one.

Things worth knowing

  • Approval lasts for that task only. Next time, it asks again.

  • It works for usernames, passwords and one-time codes from Login items. Passkeys and other item types are not supported yet.

  • While Claude is driving the browser, you can't use the 1Password extension in that window. Close the Claude tab group to end the session.

  • If the wrong login is suggested, or none, check that the website saved on the item matches the sign-in address exactly.

  • 1Password controls the sign-in. It does not control what Claude does on the site afterwards. Treat it like handing a colleague your laptop for ten minutes.

To disconnect

In Claude, choose Customize, then Connectors, then Disconnect next to 1Password.
