Is ChatGPT Plus Still Worth It in 2026?

Free now runs GPT-6 too. What $20 a month actually buys you, who it's worth it for, and the cheaper and pricier options either side.

Moving banner: a gauge needle swings round while a pink arc fills up.

For a long time the answer to "is ChatGPT Plus worth it?" was simple. If you used ChatGPT most days, yes, because the free version was noticeably worse. That got less obvious on 8 October 2026, when free users got GPT-6 too. So what is the $20 a month for now?

What Plus costs

Plus is $20 a month in the US, billed monthly, with no annual option. In the UK the price is set in pounds and includes VAT, so check the figure at checkout. Either side of it sit Go, at $8 a month, and Pro, which now starts at $100.

What you get that Free doesn't

  • The stronger model. Plus uses GPT-6 Sol. Free and Go use GPT-6 Luna. The difference shows on hard problems more than easy ones, and we compared them in GPT-6 Sol vs Luna.

  • Deeper thinking. Plus adds the Medium and High thinking levels. Free and Go get Instant and a Think button.

  • More room. A bigger context window than Free, so long documents and long conversations hold together better.

  • Expanded deep research, Codex and memory. All limited on Free.

  • Custom GPTs and connections to more tools, plus ChatGPT Work on web and mobile rather than desktop only.

  • No ads. Free and Go may show them. Plus doesn't.

What it doesn't get: the Pro model (GPT-6 Astra) in chat, the Extra High thinking level, unlimited image creation and voice, or the always-on agent that comes with Pro. Those start at $100, and we explained the three Pro plans in ChatGPT Pro 100 vs 200 vs 500.

Who it's worth it for

Worth it if ChatGPT is part of how you earn money. You use it most working days, you give it real material such as documents, spreadsheets and briefs rather than one-line questions, and the time you lose to limits or shallow answers costs you more than the subscription does. For most freelancers and small business owners using it seriously, an hour saved a month covers it.

Not worth it yet if you use it a few times a week for quick questions, emails and captions. GPT-6 Luna on Free handles that well. If what annoys you is running out of uploads or images, Go is the cheaper fix.

Worth a second look if you're on Plus mainly out of habit. Plenty of people kept paying because Free used to be frustrating. Free has moved on, and your reason for paying should have moved with it.

What else $20 buys

Plus isn't the only option at this price, and the others are genuinely different rather than cheaper copies:

  • Claude Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly, and £18 a month plus tax in the UK. It's strong on long documents and editing, and its Gmail, Calendar and Drive connectors can now take actions as well as read. It doesn't generate or edit photos.

  • Google AI Pro is $19.99 a month, or £18.99 in the UK. It makes most sense if your work already lives in Gmail, Docs and Drive, and it includes image generation and some video.

Our ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini guide goes through which suits which kind of work.

A simple test before you pay

  1. Pick the three tasks from your week that took longest: a proposal, a report, a plan.

  2. Do each one on the free version and note where it fell short.

  3. If the shortfalls are "ran out", "too shallow" or "forgot what I gave it", Plus fixes those. If they're "didn't know my business" or "wrong tone", it won't. That's a setup problem, not a plan problem.

That last point is the one most people miss. The biggest jump in usefulness rarely comes from moving up a plan. It comes from ChatGPT knowing who you are, what you work on and how you like things done, so you're not spending the first five messages of every chat explaining yourself. AI for Creators sets that up for you, and it works on whichever plan you're on.

US list prices as of 12 October 2026. UK prices include VAT and may differ.
